History of Growth in Smyrna, Tennessee

Farms and plantations dominated the Smyrna, Tennessee, landscape during the Civil War era.  The town of Smyrna first incorporated in 1869 but saw many changes.  The railroad brought initial development to Smyrna.  After the first Smyrna town charter was dissolved, the town incorporated again in 1915.  Growth began more aggressively after Sewart Air Force Base arrived in Smyrna 1941.  In 1965 the federal government announced that the Smyrna, Tennessee, base was scheduled to close by 1970.  The land associated with the Air Force Base became part of the local airport and industrial park. 

Smyrna benefited from the creation of Percy Priest Lake in the 1960s.  Later, in the 1980s, Nissan announced that they would be building a plant in Smyrna, Tennessee.  Since that time, Smyrna has seen an influx of growth.  The Sam Ridley corridor has seen tremendous growth with Stonecrest Hospital and major retailers.  Numerous industries continue to locate in and near Smyrna.
